Georgia’s Original Citizens

These are the hearty souls who made the difficult and dangerous, 2 ½ month voyage from England to the colony of Georgia.

Ironically, the first to die was Doctor William Cox, Georgia’s first Physician, who succumbed in just 59 days to one of the many diseases he was treating, which were plaguing the new arrivals. He was the first to be buried in Savannah’s first cemetery on the northwest corner of Wright Square. He was given a full military honors funeral by General Oglethorpe. His 10 year old son soon after apprenticed as a carpenter and was among those who built America’s oldest Orphanage, Bethesda. He later became a shipwright. Direct descendants of his family still live in Savannah.

You may find your family name listed below. You may be a descendant of one of the original colonists. If you are, we invite you to contact us http://www.georgiasfirstday.com\contactus.asp and participate with other descendants in this

Remembrance and celebration.
